Cologne Christmas Market Food Guide 2026: Dates, What to Eat & Prices
Cologne’s cathedral market on Roncalliplatz runs 16 November–23 December 2026 and is closed on Sunday 22 November. Only the Hafen market (to 3 January 2027) and the Heumarkt ice rink are listed as open on 24–25 December.
Cologne does not have one Christmas market; it has several, each with its own look and its own dates. The best known stands on Roncalliplatz beside the cathedral, but there is also a market in the Altstadt, another at the Rhine harbour near the Chocolate Museum, and smaller ones at Neumarkt, Rudolfplatz and the Stadtgarten. That spread matters when you plan what to eat, because the dates and closing days are different at each site. This guide lays out the 2026 calendar, the Rhenish and German treats to look for, and the price figures that have been reported, with the year attached to each.
Dates checked on 15 October 2026 against the official sources – always re-check the market’s own website before you book.
When the markets open in 2026
The dates below come from the city portal koeln.de. The Dom organiser’s own site was not checked, so confirm the details there too.
- Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom (Roncalliplatz): Monday 16 November to Wednesday 23 December 2026. Hours are Sunday to Wednesday 11:00-21:00, Thursday and Friday 11:00-22:00, Saturday 10:00-22:00. It is closed on Sunday 22 November, Totensonntag. Entry is free.
- Heinzels Wintermärchen: the Alter Markt part runs 23 November to 23 December 2026. The Heumarkt part, which includes the ice rink, runs 23 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. Daily hours are 11:00-22:00, and Heinzels is closed on 24 and 25 December. For Heumarkt, koeln.de lists hours of 11:00-21:00 from 31 December. Other sources disagree on the end date, so the 10 January figure is the city portal’s.
- Neumarkt and Nikolausdorf (Rudolfplatz): 16 November to 23 December.
- Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt (Rheinauhafen): 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027.
- Stadtgarten: 13 November to 23 December.
The practical result is that most markets finish on 23 December. For Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, only the Hafen market and the Heumarkt ice rink stay open, according to koeln.de, since Heinzels is closed on those two days.
One change for 2026: the city cancelled the original tender for the Roncalliplatz site in August 2025 and ran it again. KW Kölner Weihnachtsgesellschaft mbH won the concession for 2026 to 2030, so the Dom market has a new operator. No announced changes to the layout or concept turned up in the sources. Separately, entering the cathedral itself has cost 12 EUR (6 EUR reduced) since 1 July 2026, according to koeln.de and regional reports, while the market on the square remains free.
What to eat and drink
Food prices for Cologne’s markets are less well documented than for some other cities, and what exists comes mostly from reports in 2024. They are labelled by year below, and where nothing reliable exists the text says so.
- Reibekuchen. Crisp fried fritters of grated potato, served in the Rhineland with apple sauce. They are a standard savoury option, but prices vary and the figures found were not recent enough to quote.
- Glühwein. Mulled wine. At the Hafen market it cost about 4.50 EUR for 0.2 l in November 2024. A consumer site’s survey in November 2025 said the Dom market was charging more than 5 EUR (2025), without giving an exact price.
- Feuerzangenbowle. Mulled wine with a rum-soaked sugar loaf set alight. About 6.50 EUR per cup at the Hafen market (2024).
- Gebrannte Mandeln and Maronen. Sugar-roasted almonds started at about 4 EUR at the Hafen market, and six roasted chestnuts cost about 3 EUR (2024).
- Printen. Hard, spiced gingerbread. It is classically a speciality of nearby Aachen rather than of Cologne itself, though it is widely sold in the city at this time of year. Prices vary.
- Mutzemandeln. Small almond-flavoured pastries associated with Cologne’s carnival season and with the markets. Prices vary.
- Kölsch. The local top-fermented beer, available at some stands. Prices vary.
- Hot meals. At the Hafen market in 2024, a Flammlachsbrötchen (a roll with smoked salmon) cost about 9 EUR, Käsespätzle about 8 EUR and Langos from about 6.50 EUR.
These are 2024 prices from a single market and are best read as an indication of the level. The Dom and Altstadt markets may differ, and all stalls set their own prices.
Where to eat best
For atmosphere and the cathedral backdrop, the Dom market is the obvious first stop. The sources do not say it has better or cheaper food than the others, so it is best treated as one site among several. The Altstadt market, Heinzels Wintermärchen, is open 11:00-22:00 daily and pairs the Alter Markt with the Heumarkt and its ice rink, which stays open into January 2027. The Hafen market, near the Rheinauhafen and the Chocolate Museum, is where most of the reported 2024 price figures come from, and it runs to 3 January 2027.
If you want a wider picture of where to eat in the city beyond the stalls, the Cologne food guide covers the main areas and the local dishes year-round.
Practical tips
- Mug deposit. The reported deposit was 3 EUR at the Alter Markt and Heumarkt in 2024, and 3.50 EUR at the Hafen market in November 2024. The Dom market’s deposit for 2025 and 2026 was not found, so ask at the stall.
- Totensonntag. The Dom market is closed on Sunday 22 November. Plan around it if you are in town that weekend, and check each of the other sites’ own pages for their hours that Sunday.
- Christmas week. Most of the markets end on 23 December. If you are in Cologne on 24 or 25 December, the Hafen market and the Heumarkt ice rink are the ones listed as open.
- Between Christmas and New Year. The Hafen market runs to 3 January 2027 and the Heumarkt rink to 10 January 2027, so those are the places to look.
- Crowds. As general advice, and not an official figure: weekday afternoons are usually calmer than Friday and Saturday evenings.
- Budget. Prices vary from site to site and stall to stall, so it can be worth comparing a couple of boards before you order. The Dom market is free to enter.
A short note before you go
The calendar is the part of Cologne’s Christmas markets that needs the most care. The Dom market is closed on 22 November and ends on 23 December, Heinzels is shut on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and only the Hafen market and the Heumarkt rink run on past that. For those who prefer to have someone else plan the tasting, a guided food tour in the city can cover Cologne’s local dishes alongside whatever the market is serving. Check the individual market sites again before you travel, since the Dom market in particular has a new operator this year.
