Krakow Christmas Market Food Guide 2026: Dates, What to Eat & Prices
Kraków’s Christmas market on the Main Market Square is provisionally planned for 27 November 2026–6 January 2027; the city has not yet published an official notice. In 2025 most stalls charged 25–30 zł (about 6–7 EUR) for grzaniec galicyjski.
The Kraków Christmas market fills the Main Market Square, the Rynek Główny, with wooden stalls selling grilled mountain cheese, hot spiced wine, sausages and dumplings. It is a fair that mixes Polish regional food with the usual market snacks, and the Polish press has criticised its prices in recent years. This guide sets out what is sold, what it cost the last time anyone published a price check, and what is still unconfirmed for 2026.
Dates checked on 15 October 2026 against the official sources – always re-check the market’s own website before you book.
When the Kraków Christmas Market Opens in 2026
The 2026 dates are provisional. The city has not yet published an official notice, and the city’s own notice usually appears only a few days before the opening. The best current indication is a Kraków city-hosted offer sheet from the organiser, ARTIM, dated April 2026, which lists the Christmas market on the Main Market Square for 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. The tourist site visitkrakow.com gives the same dates, but describes them as based on pre-season planning. One travel blog says 28 November, so plan around a start in the last days of November and confirm the exact date nearer the time.
For comparison, last year’s market ran from Friday 28 November 2025 to Thursday 1 January 2026, with about 105 stalls, according to the city’s official notice. The pattern in recent years has been an opening on the last Friday of November. Last year, stalls were reported open from 10:00 to 20:00, with food stalls staying open until about 22:00 (2025). Hours for 24 December, 25 December and New Year’s Eve in 2026 have not been published.
One change worth knowing: since the 2025 to 2026 season the city has dropped the large free New Year’s concert on the square. A projection on the Cloth Hall facade takes its place.
The Rynek is the main site. Smaller satellite markets operate at Galeria Krakowska and on plac Wolnica in Kazimierz, according to visitkrakow.com.
What to Eat and Drink at the Kraków Christmas Market
Prices below are in złoty, from a November 2025 price check by the local site Co w Krakowie and a November 2024 report by PAP and money.pl. Euro figures are rough conversions at about 4.25 PLN to the euro.
Grzaniec galicyjski
Grzaniec galicyjski is the local mulled wine, or sometimes mulled beer, heavily spiced. In 2025 the cheapest cup was around 20 zł (about 4.70 EUR, 2025), and most stalls charged 25 to 30 zł (about 6 to 7 EUR, 2025). In 2024 a 200 ml cup was 18 zł and a 400 ml red mulled wine was 45 zł.
Oscypek z żurawiną
Oscypek is a smoked sheep’s-milk cheese from the Tatra Mountains, grilled and served with cranberry jam. In 2024, PAP reported 17 zł (about 4 EUR, 2024) for a traditional oscypek. A dependable 2025 figure was not found, so check the board.
Obwarzanek krakowski
The obwarzanek is a ring of bread that is boiled and then baked, and it has protected geographical status. It is sold from street carts around the Rynek and is more an everyday snack than a Christmas one. Prices vary.
Pierogi
Pierogi are Polish dumplings. In 2024 the press reported around 50 zł per portion (about 12 EUR, 2024), and some stalls priced by weight per 100 g, which makes it important to read the sign. A separate 2025 figure was not found.
Placek po zbójnicku
This is the highlander potato pancake served with goulash, a hearty dish from the Tatra highlands. Prices vary.
Kiełbasa, zapiekanka and the savoury plates
Savoury prices in 2025, from the same Co w Krakowie survey, were:
- Kiełbasa, a sausage in a roll: 45 zł (about 10.50 EUR, 2025).
- Zapiekanka, the long toasted baguette with mushrooms and cheese: 30 zł for 20 cm and up to 42 zł for the krakowska version (about 7 to 10 EUR, 2025).
- Pajda chleba with smalec, bread with lard spread: 19 zł (about 4.50 EUR, 2025).
- Żurek, the sour rye soup: 35 zł (about 8 EUR, 2025).
- Bigos, the hunter’s stew: 40 zł (about 9.50 EUR, 2025).
- Golonka, the pork knuckle: 60 zł (about 14 EUR, 2025).
The city’s own 2025 list of food at the fair also named maczanka, traditional sausage, soups, country bread, gingerbread, roasted nuts, chocolate and Turkish halva.
Where to Eat Best: Main Square or Somewhere Else
There is a fair amount of criticism of Rynek prices on record. In 2024 the Polish press ran heavily critical coverage of what it called cosmic prices, with pierogi near 50 zł as the headline example, and a Polish travel site noted that the square sits noticeably above ordinary restaurant prices. That is useful to keep in mind when comparing the board with a regular restaurant menu nearby.
The satellite markets at Galeria Krakowska and plac Wolnica are smaller, and no price comparison between them and the Rynek was found. If you want a full sit-down meal, a regular restaurant menu may give you a better like-for-like comparison than the stalls do. The Rynek is where the atmosphere is, though, and for a cup of grzaniec and a grilled oscypek the main fair remains the obvious stop.
Practical Tips for Eating at the Kraków Christmas Market
- Karta Krakowska discount. Holders of the Karta Krakowska got 20 percent off marked food stalls, excluding alcohol, at the main fair in 2025. Look for the marked stalls and check that the offer applies again in 2026.
- Payment. Cards were widely accepted at the stalls in 2025, according to a Polish trains website, but it recommends carrying some cash for small purchases.
- Crowd timing. The same source says the market is busiest from the first week of December until 23 December, and calmest between Christmas and New Year.
- Read the unit. Some dishes are priced per portion and others per 100 g. Check which before you order.
- Mugs. No sourced information on a mug deposit in Kraków was found, so ask at the stall.
Eating Beyond the Market
The fair is only a few weeks of the year, while the city’s food scene runs all year. Our Krakow food guide covers where to eat once the stalls are packed away. For a more guided approach, food tours and tastings in Kraków are another way to try Polish dishes.
Check the official Kraków sources in late November for the confirmed opening date, because the 27 November start is still a plan and not an announcement.
