Prague’s Old Town Square market is confirmed by its organiser for 28 November 2026–6 January 2027, daily 10:00–22:00. Svařák cost 100 Kč (about 4 EUR, 2025) there, and trdelník is not a Czech Christmas tradition.

Prague’s Christmas markets are built around two big squares, the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, with smaller markets at náměstí Republiky and elsewhere in the city. The food is a mix of local things, such as grilled sausage and hot svařák, and the sweet spiral pastry that tourists now associate with the city. One of the more interesting facts for anyone eating there is that this pastry is not a Czech Christmas tradition at all.

Dates checked on 15 October 2026 against the official sources – always re-check the market’s own website before you book.

When the Prague Christmas Markets Open in 2026

The Old Town Square market is confirmed by its organiser for 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, daily from 10:00 to 22:00. The Wenceslas Square market is listed on the city’s official site, prague.eu, for the same period and the same hours. The market at náměstí Republiky runs for a shorter season, from 25 November to 24 December 2026, with no hours listed. The date of the Old Town tree lighting has not been stated.

Hours for Christmas Eve and the holidays in 2026 have not been published. Last year’s pattern, as reported by the Prague news site expats.cz for the 2025 season, was 10:00 to 14:00 on 24 December, 12:00 to 22:00 on 25 and 26 December, 10:00 to 15:00 on 31 December and 12:00 to 22:00 on 1 January. Food stalls stayed open until midnight that year. Those are last year’s hours and may change.

What to Eat and Drink at the Prague Christmas Markets

The prices below are from a December 2025 survey of Old Town Square stalls, reported by the Czech news outlet Seznam Zprávy and passed on by a secondary website, so they are a rough guide. Euro figures are approximate conversions at about 24 to 25 CZK to the euro.

Trdelník

Trdelník is dough rolled around a spit, grilled until golden, rolled in sugar and walnut, and often filled with ice cream. It is everywhere in the centre, and it is not a traditional Czech Christmas dish. Its roots are in Slovakia, where the trdelník from Skalica has European protected status since 2007, and its closest relative is the Hungarian kürtőskalács. The Prague craze is recent, and there is no solid evidence for the claim that it is a Czech original. That does not make it bad, only worth knowing about before you queue. At the Old Town Square in 2025 it cost 100 to 180 Kč (about 4 to 7 EUR, 2025), with the price depending on the filling.

Klobása

Klobása is a grilled sausage, usually served in a roll with mustard. At the Old Town Square it cost 160 Kč (about 6.50 EUR, 2025). One Polish-language guide quotes much lower figures, 76 to 102 Kč, but it is undated, so use the 2025 survey number.

Svařák and punč

Svařák is Czech mulled wine and punč is hot punch. Both were 100 Kč (about 4 EUR, 2025) at the Old Town Square in December 2025. A 2024 report by expats.cz found a svařák at 100 Kč on the Old Town Square and 100 to 120 Kč on Wenceslas Square, which suggests prices have been stable.

Langoš

Langoš is fried dough, usually served with garlic, cheese or sour cream. It cost 180 Kč (about 7.50 EUR, 2025) at the Old Town Square in the 2025 survey.

Bramborák and medovina

Bramborák is a potato pancake seasoned with garlic and marjoram. No sourced price was found, so prices vary. Medovina, warm honey mead, is sold by a few specialist producers at the Old Town market according to one guide. Prices also vary.

Other things on offer

The 2025 coverage from expats.cz also mentioned hot cider, roasted chestnuts, fried carp with potato salad, cheeses and churros among the stalls. No stall price was found for the carp, so prices vary.

Where to Eat Best: Old Town Square or a Smaller Market

The Old Town Square is the best known, with the postcard setting. Wenceslas Square is the other big market. Going by the 2024 svařák prices, 100 Kč against 100 to 120 Kč, there is little to gain on drinks by choosing one over the other.

The smaller markets may offer lower prices. One media report from 2024 gave a trdelník at 80 Kč and a svařák at 75 Kč on Náměstí Míru, though that figure is low-confidence and comes from a secondary mention. That would be well below the Old Town figures, but treat it with caution. The náměstí Republiky market, as noted, runs only to 24 December.

Practical Tips for Eating at the Prague Christmas Markets

  • Mug deposit. A Prague travel guide says the ceramic souvenir mug usually carries a deposit of 40 to 50 Kč (about 1.60 to 2 EUR). The guide is undated, so treat the amount as approximate and check at the stall.
  • Payment. Cards are reportedly accepted at many stalls, but there is no official confirmation, so carry some korunas for small purchases.
  • Budget. The 2025 survey suggests that a svařák, a klobása and a trdelník together come to roughly 360 to 440 Kč, or about 15 to 18 EUR (2025). Smaller squares appear to be cheaper.
  • Crowds. The Old Town Square is the busiest of the markets, so weekday mornings are generally the easier time to visit, as at any large Christmas market.
  • Christmas Eve. If last year’s pattern holds, the markets close early on 24 December, so confirm the 2026 hours before you plan the day.

Eating Beyond the Markets

For the dishes that Prague residents actually eat during the rest of the year, our Prague food guide covers restaurants, beer halls and traditional Czech cooking. If you would like a guide to walk you through the local side of the menu, food tours and guided tastings in Prague are one way to do it.

Check the official organiser pages in November, since the Christmas Eve hours and the tree-lighting date were still unannounced when this guide was checked.
